vs. Explorer

Tern Files vs. File Explorer

Explorer is part of Windows – and a good starting point. Here is what Tern Files adds, measured on the same test folders and compared feature by feature.

(01)Speed

Measured, not promised.

Open a folder with 10,000 files

Tern Files: to the finished list in the window. Explorer: only reading the entries through Windows, without a window.

Tern Files
0.13 s
Explorer
≥ 0.44 s
3.3×faster

Open a folder with 100,000 files

Same measurement with ten times as many files.

Tern Files
0.42 s
Explorer
≥ 3.9 s
9.2×faster

Search by name outside the Windows index

Tern Files: own index with 2 million files. Explorer: has to read every entry – here already 100,000.

Tern Files
0.011 s
Explorer
≥ 3.9 s
> 350×faster

Copy a 2 GB file

Same file, same drive; Explorer's own copy function (IFileOperation). Higher is better.

Tern Files
423 MB/s
Explorer
399 MB/s
+6 %throughput

How it was measured: AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 32 GB RAM, Windows 11, 30 Sep 2026, tools/bench.ps1. Explorer itself cannot be timed without changing its history, so the same folders were read through the Windows shell – the layer Explorer's list is built on. Explorer needs at least that long; its window and view come on top. Not compared: start time and memory, because Explorer always runs as the taskbar and desktop.
