Folder sizes

See how big every folder is – right in the list.

In File Explorer the Size column stays empty for folders, and you open Properties one folder at a time. Tern Files shows the size of every folder in the list.

Tern Files with folder sizes and size bars in the list

Sizes right in the list

The Size column shows the size of every folder with a small bar. The longest bar belongs to the largest item, so you see at a glance where your space goes.

  • The values fill in while you keep working; the list doesn't jump.
  • Click the column header to sort by size – folders included.
  • A ≈ in front of a value marks a first estimate until Tern Files has counted the folder again.

What counts – and what doesn't

Hidden files count, hard links count once, and links to other folders aren't followed. Cloud files that are only online count with their size – nothing is downloaded.

Under Settings › Appearance › Folder sizes you choose Always, Local only or Off. Local only is the default and leaves out network folders, because counting over the network takes long. See Folder sizes.

One folder in detail

The Details pane (Ctrl+Shift+D) shows the size of the selected folder in large type, its share of the parent folder, what it contains by type and the list Largest contents – even on a network drive. See Details pane.

What fills the whole drive

In the sidebar, Storage & duplicates opens the storage view: a bar splits the used space into categories such as Your files and Apps & games, and a map shows the biggest folders. A double-click opens a folder in a tab. See Storage overview.

Folder sizes and this overview stay free after the 14-day trial. The pages Large files and Not opened in a long time need Pro.
