The first version in the Microsoft Store – with a command palette, archives that open like folders, smart folders, tabs that survive crashes and an Office preview without Office.
New
Command palette
Ctrl+Shift+P opens every command and every setting to type. The ones you used last are at the top, and Ctrl+Enter gives a command your own shortcut right there.
Archives open like folders
ZIP, 7z, RAR and TAR – also .tar.gz, .tgz, .tar.bz2 and .tar.xz. Look inside, preview with the space bar, drag single files out or extract everything. Encrypted archives ask for the password.
Edit ZIP files
Rename, delete and add files and folders inside a ZIP – with undo. Open a file from a ZIP, change it, and Tern Files asks whether it goes back into the archive.
Smart folders
Folders that fill themselves – with everything new this week, say, or all PDFs of the last 7 days. Start from a template in the sidebar or save a search as a smart folder.
Tabs survive crashes
If Tern Files did not close normally, the next start offers every window and tab again. Ctrl+Shift+T brings closed tabs back, and a folder that is out of reach – a NAS that is switched off – stays a tab until it is back.
Office preview without Office
Word, Excel and PowerPoint files show their text with headings, lists, tables and sheets – even when Office is not installed.
Improved
Faster start with many windows
With several windows to restore, the first one is ready right away and the others follow – 20 tabs in 3 windows in under 0.8 s.
One set of commands everywhere
The palette, the search box, the launcher and your shortcuts share the same commands, so a shortcut you change works everywhere.
Demo folder with archives and Office files
Try the new features right away: the demo folder from the setup now has ZIP, 7z, TAR.GZ and an encrypted ZIP, plus a Word, Excel and PowerPoint file.
Version on the licence page
Settings › Licence shows the version, the architecture and where Tern Files comes from (Microsoft Store, direct or portable).
